About Turkish

Turkish is a Turkic language spoken primarily in Turkey and Northern Cyprus. It is notable for its vowel harmony, agglutinative grammar where suffixes are added to roots, and the absence of grammatical gender. Modern Turkish uses a Latin-based alphabet introduced by Atatürk in 1928, replacing the Ottoman Turkish script. Turkish vocabulary has influences from Arabic, Persian, and French.

Cultural Note

Turkish uses vowel harmony — suffixes change to match the preceding vowel. There is no grammatical gender. The letter ç is like "ch," ş is like "sh," and ğ is a silent lengthening of the previous vowel.
