About Arabic

Arabic is a Semitic language spoken by over 310 million people across the Middle East and North Africa. It is the liturgical language of Islam and one of the six official languages of the United Nations. Arabic is written from right to left using the Arabic script, which features 28 letters. The language has a rich root-based morphology where most words derive from a three-consonant root.

Cultural Note

Arabic is written and read right to left. Short vowels are often omitted in everyday writing. Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) is used formally; regional dialects are used in daily speech.
