About Portuguese

Portuguese is a Romance language that originated in the Iberian Peninsula and is now spoken across Brazil, Portugal, several African nations, and parts of Asia. It is the sixth most spoken language in the world. Portuguese shares strong similarities with Spanish but has distinct pronunciation, including nasal vowels and unique sound patterns.

Cultural Note

Portuguese uses nasal vowels (ã, õ, am, em) pronounced through the nose. The tilde (~) marks nasalization. In Brazil, você is informal "you," while in Portugal tu is more common informally.
